WEIGHT

Weight care that fits your plans

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are both used by women. Tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss in the head-to-head trial of the approved products, while semaglutide has the longest track record. Pregnancy plans matter for both.

Figures come from trials of FDA-approved products and doses, not compounded formulations.

Compare your options

Pregnancy and planned pregnancy. Neither is used during pregnancy. The FDA label for semaglutide 2.4 mg advises stopping at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Tirzepatide can make birth-control pills less effective, so its label advises a non-oral method or an added barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase.

Stomach side effects. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation are the most common, mostly during dose increases. Smaller meals and eating slowly may help.

Protecting muscle and bone. Most weight lost in the trials was fat, but lean mass also fell by about 10%. Strength training and enough protein may help preserve muscle, and in one trial exercise alongside a GLP-1 medicine preserved bone density.

If you stop. Weight often returns after stopping. In the STEP 1 extension, participants regained about two-thirds of the weight they lost within a year.

HAIR

Understanding female-pattern thinning

Female-pattern hair loss usually shows as a widening part and thinning over the crown, often with the front hairline kept. Genetics and androgen activity play a role. Options support growth (minoxidil), reduce androgen effects (spironolactone), or combine approaches.

If pregnancy is possible. Spironolactone, finasteride and dutasteride can affect a male fetus and are avoided if pregnancy is possible. Oral minoxidil and topical tretinoin are also usually avoided during pregnancy, and hormone-containing formulas need a clinician conversation first. Tell your clinician about any pregnancy plans.

Topical or oral minoxidil? Topical minoxidil is FDA-approved over the counter for female-pattern hair loss. Low-dose oral minoxidil is used off-label; its most common side effect is unwanted facial or body hair (about 15% in a large safety study).

Why spironolactone? Spironolactone is an antiandrogen: it reduces the effect of androgens on hair follicles. A 2023 review found improvement in roughly 57% of patients studied, though studies varied widely. Its hair-loss use is off-label.

What about DHT blockers? Finasteride and dutasteride are mainly used by men. They can affect a male fetus, so they are not used by anyone who is or may become pregnant.

Hormone-containing formulas. Women’s Scalp Solution contains estradiol (an estrogen), progesterone and liothyronine (thyroid hormone). Evidence for these ingredients in topical hair treatment is limited, so discuss your history with your clinician.

What each ingredient is. Minoxidil: vasodilator. Spironolactone: antiandrogen. Tretinoin: retinoid. Fluocinolone: corticosteroid. Estradiol and progesterone: hormones. Liothyronine: thyroid hormone. Biotin: vitamin.

WELLNESS

Two different approaches to wellness

NAD+ supports how cells make energy; sermorelin prompts your own growth-hormone release. What each does in the body is well established. Whether that translates into broad wellness or anti-aging benefits is still being studied.

RESEARCH, TRANSLATED

What the studies found, in plain English

Each snapshot shows the finding, what it means, who was studied and the source. Results come from specific products and doses, not a promise for any one person.

SURMOUNT-5: tirzepatide vs semaglutide

What the study found
20.2% vs 13.7%
Who was studied
751 adults with obesity, without diabetes
What it means
In the first head-to-head trial, adults taking tirzepatide lost more weight on average than those taking semaglutide over 72 weeks.
Important context
Compared the maximum tolerated doses of FDA-approved products in an open-label trial. It does not show that compounded versions produce the same results. Once-weekly subcutaneous tirzepatide vs semaglutide · Tirzepatide 10 or 15 mg; semaglutide 1.7 or 2.4 mg · 72 weeks

STEP 1: semaglutide 2.4 mg

What the study found
14.9%
Who was studied
1,961 adults with overweight or obesity, without diabetes
What it means
In the STEP 1 trial, adults receiving studied semaglutide 2.4 mg plus lifestyle intervention lost an average 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks.
Important context
Study involved a specific semaglutide formulation and dose. Individual results vary. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. Once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide plus lifestyle intervention · 2.4 mg once weekly · 68 weeks

Spironolactone for female pattern hair loss

What the study found
About 57%
Who was studied
Patients with female pattern hair loss, across multiple studies
What it means
A systematic review found improvement in roughly 57% of patients studied, although treatment approaches and outcomes varied considerably across studies.
Important context
The underlying studies were heterogeneous and the review states more research is needed. This is not a guaranteed response rate. Oral spironolactone · Varied across studies

WHAT WOMEN ASK

Straight answers to common questions

Can women use minoxidil?

Yes. Topical minoxidil is FDA-approved over the counter for female-pattern hair loss. Low-dose oral minoxidil is also used off-label. Neither is recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without a clinician conversation.

Why is spironolactone used for hair loss?

Androgens can shrink hair follicles in women too. Spironolactone blocks androgen effects, which is why it is used off-label for female-pattern thinning. A 2023 review found improvement in roughly 57% of patients studied, though results varied across studies. It is not used during pregnancy.

Which hair-loss medications matter if pregnancy is possible?

Finasteride, dutasteride and spironolactone can affect a male fetus and are avoided. Oral minoxidil and topical tretinoin are also usually avoided during pregnancy, and hormone-containing formulas need a clinician conversation. Tell your clinician about any pregnancy plans.

Will GLP-1 weight loss cause muscle loss?

Some lean mass is lost with most significant weight loss. In the STEP 1 and SURMOUNT-1 body-composition studies, lean mass fell by about 10%, while fat mass fell by more. How much this affects strength is still being studied.

What can help protect muscle while losing weight?

Regular strength training and enough protein are the most widely recommended steps, along with staying active. In one trial, adults who combined a GLP-1 medicine with regular exercise kept their bone density. Your clinician can suggest what fits your health.

Can rapid weight loss cause temporary hair shedding?

Yes. Shedding after rapid or large weight loss is a recognized, usually temporary pattern. Hair loss was reported slightly more often than with placebo in GLP-1 trials: about 3% vs 1% for semaglutide 2.4 mg and 4% to 5% vs 1% for tirzepatide.
